INTERVIEW- Brandon Rogers

1. What is the job of a microbiologist?

His answer: A microbiologist is someone who studies organisms and infections to further help prevent them.

My response: That's what I thought. Hopefully I will get to experience it as a profession soon enough!

2. How has histology benefitted people so far?

His answer: Histology has given us the ability to determine relatively quickly what is going wrong, or if nothing is going wrong, with the human body. It was so much more difficult to determine without all of the current technology that we have today.

My response: It really is amazing, isn't it? The technology used in modern times (like histology technology) benefits us so much.

3. What do you want to do after you achieve your major?

His answer: I would personally like to travel around the world to help come up with new ways of discovering illnesses, and then create a way to prevent said illness from reoccurring.

My response: That's awesome! That sounds like it would be so much fun, but so informational at the same time. I would love to accompany you if I could!

4. Would you ever want to create a formula or test to add to the pathology discoveries?

His answer: Most definitely! Like I said, I would love to come up with cures and treatments for illnesses that were previously unknown.

My response: It really would be pretty cool. I hope I have the chance to create something that can help mankind.

5. Do you think getting a PhD in Microbiology is the right choice for me?

His answer: You seem to really be passionate about that field, so it is hard for me to think of something else that would suit you better!

My response: Thank you! I love science with all my heart and I can't wait to see where it leads me.

6. Do you have any advice on what I should focus on in college? His answer: First off, make sure that you are currently taking advantage of what you are learning in your mentorship. Also, chemistry is a must, but it is very difficult so do all you can to prepare yourself for it.

My response: I am trying my best to. I'm currently taking AP Chemistry and, while it is very difficult, I know it is only helping me.

7. What is the hardest part about pursuing a field in microbiology?

His answer: A field in microbiology is very much work in itself, but I believe that the schooling is going to be the hardest part. While you are very bright, the workload that you will encounter going for a degree in microbiology is very strenuous.

My response: No matter how intense the difficulty, I believe that it will all work out and benefit me in the long run.

8. Do you believe that I am making the right choice about my future?

His answer: Yes. You seem very motivated, even at your age, about what you want to do with your life, and it even inspires me. It is amazing to see someone so dedicated to their future and what they are learning.

My response: You are definitely giving me quite the self-confidence boost today! But really, thank you very much. I am very eager to see what the future holds and I am so excited to get out in the world.

9. Where would the world be without microbiology?

His answer: VERY lost! Microbiology provides the human population with so much insight and information that we would be in a world of trouble without it.

My response: I honestly could not have said it better myself. Microbiology has helped us so incredibly much!

10. Do you, as a friend and a peer, believe that I can truly make a difference in the world?

His answer: Alden, this is going to sound cliché, but you can do anything that you set your mind to. So, yes. I really do believe that you can make a difference in this world.

My response: I absolutely can't wait and I couldn't agree more!
